MIchael Barone Gets It Right. The Public Sector Chokes the Private Sector

In his most recent opinion editorial, Michael Barone outlines just why 2009 was a great year to be working for the government.

It looks like a happy new year for you -- if you're a public employee.
That's the takeaway from a recent Rasmussen poll that shows that 46 percent of government employees say the economy is getting better, while just 31 percent say it's getting worse. In contrast, 32 percent of those with private-sector jobs say the economy is getting better, while 49 percent say it is getting worse.
Private-sector employment peaked at 115.8 million in December 2007, when the recession officially began. It was down to 108.5 million last November. That's a 6 percent decline.

Public-sector employment peaked at 22.6 million in August 2008. It fell a bit in 2009, then rebounded back to 22.5 million in November. That's less than a 1 percent decline.

This is not an accident -- it is the result of deliberate public policy. About one-third of the $787 million stimulus package passed in February 2009 was directed at state and local governments, which have been facing declining revenues and are, mostly, required to balance their budgets.
At some point -- and this already has occurred in much of Western Europe -- public-sector spending tends to choke off private-sector growth. America's current high unemployment levels have been commonplace in much of Western Europe for the last 25 years.

From Hawaii, president Obama made further remarks regarding the attempted bombing of flight 253 by a Nigerian terrorist. When talking about the increased security measures, Obama said:
When our government has information on a known extremist and that information is not shared and acted on as it should have been a systemic failure has occurred, and I consider that unacceptable.”

Who Wants to See Ben Bernanke Get Grilled?

Senator Jim Bunning is eclectic in many ways. He was the only Senator who refused to vote  on health care "reform" on Christmas Eve morning and instead went home to family. Yet, he's also one of the toughest critics against Alan Greenspan and his successor Ben Bernanke. During Bernanke's confirmation hearing not too long ago, Bunning gave Bernanke a swift right hook:

Unfortunately (or maybe fortunately) Bunning was essentially forced into retirement after the NRSC told him he wouldn't be able to win in 2010 and they refused to support him. Today we have KY Secretary of State Trey Grayson and Ron Paul's son Rand running as Republicans for his seat. On the Democratic side, Attorney General Jack Conway and Lt. Governor Daniel Mongiardo are running for the seat.

I still am not certain who I support.

Merry Christmas - With A Declaration

For those of you who have been under a rock for roughly 2000 years, today and tomorrow is Christmas Eve and Christmas Day respectively. A time of joy, love and hope for a multitude of reasons. With that in mind I give my best wishes to you, your family and your friends. It is a truly great world and nation we live in, despite all it's problems.

And speaking of  those very problems, this Christmas Eve morning at about a quarter 'til 8 the Senate passed a monstrosity of a health care "reform" bill that undermines the very cornerstone of the American Constitution and the American nation as well as the base that this great nation was placed upon: individual freedom, the right to life, liberty, the pursuit of happiness and the natural laws of God and nature.

It is with this in mind that we must pledge amongst ourselves a new Declaration of Independence. We the People must break from "the political bands which have connected them with another and to assume among the powers of the earth, the separate and equal station to which the Laws of Nature and of Nature's God entitle them."

From this point forward every patriot from sea to shining sea must again "for the support of this Declaration, with a firm reliance on the protection of Divine Providence, mutually pledge to each other our Lives, our Fortunes, and our sacred Honor."

The war is not yet over, and perhaps not even the battle.

So This is How Liberty Dies - With a Vacation.

In case you haven't heard, Mitch McConnell has brokered a deal with Reid to make the vote on health care "reform" several hours earlier on Christmas Eve at around 8am rather than in the evening. This way, Senators and staffers can get out of DC before an ice storm and get home to their families (which is understandable).

But when you read what we conservatives had been telling McConnell and other "leaders" all along, you have to wonder why all this is necessary:
The Senate Republican Leadership under Mitch McConnell and Lamar Alexander told us to trust them.
They were going to offer a series of “messaging amendments” to point out all the flaws in the health care legislation. The rest of us said no — force a vote on the legislation while the Dems did not have 60 votes.
They ignored us.
Then we said drag out the legislation as long as possible. They ignored us until votes were scheduled, making the dragging out impossible. When the scheduled time for the votes came, it did not matter if the bill was being read, the votes would happen.
Along the way, McConnell and Alexander pooh-poohed anyone who suggested the messaging strategy was doomed to failure.
Well played, Mitch McConnell. Well played indeed. At 8:00 a.m. on Christmas Eve, 60 Democrats will pass legislation that prohibits its own future repeal, then Mitch McConnell will hop a flight to Kentucky, smiling that he and his good friend Harry Reid negotiated a Republican surrender to get out of Washington before an ice storm struck.

I'll give you this isn't even a vote on the final bill, but McConnell needs to speak out more and ask why we are even considering having a vote on Christmas Eve in the first place. What are they hiding ( we know, but it'll look good on the news)?

Speaking of the news, this morning vote means this bill that's already sour in the public eye will be covered on a day when most are off work.

Downside? I have to wake up early now.

Giuliani to Stay Out of NY Senate Race - And Out of Politics Forever

Really, Giuliani? Grow a pair.
Not only was this Giuliani's likely last chance for a spot on the national stage, it's a shame the star power conservatives will be losing with this one.
Not that that seat isn't winnable by conservatives, but this was a missed opportunity for the mayor.
Former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani has ruled out a run for the Senate in 2010, NewsCore has learned.
The seat is currently held by Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand, D-N.Y., who was appointed by Gov. David Paterson when Sen. Hillary Clinton joined the Obama administration as secretary of state.
One source close to the former mayor says that instead of running for office, he will be pursuing other business opportunities in the private sector, noting that after his 2008 presidential run the mayor still has the status within the party and the platform from which “to engage on national issues that are important to him.”
Giuliani is also expected to announce his intention to revive his Solutions America PAC as a vehicle to promote Republican party candidates in 2010, the source said.

Harry Reid Calls $1.2 Billion in Sweetheart Deals “Compromises”

Harry Reid barely got the 60 votes he needed to get cloture on the Senate Health Care Reform bill by giving out special deals to Democrats still holding out. Among the deals were extra money for Ben Nelson's state of Nebraska (to be paid for by other the other 49 states), $250 million more for Vermont's Medicaid fund, as well $300 million for Louisiana - and much more.

To many, those deals were essentially bribes meant to buy votes using other state's money. Harry Reid, who negotiated the deals, disagrees and calls them "compromises."

The Hill:
Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) on Monday dismissed criticism his chamber’s healthcare bill was riddled with “sweetheart deals” designed to win skeptical senators’ votes.
Those alleged deals are “compromises” that are commonplace in any piece of legislation, no matter who controls Congress or sponsors the bill in question, Reid told reporters.
No word yet if Reid considers these "compromises" as historic and worthy as the great compromises of the past: three-fifths, Missouri, and 1850.

“Rock the Vote” Has No Dignity - And Thinks You're a Gullible Idiot

What you're about to watch is the equivalent of “Rock the Vote” telling you that "gullible" is written on the ceiling. And they actually think you'll look.

I've never seen anything like this. Sex as a weapon? Riiight. That'll work.

Statue of Young Obama Built in Indonesia - With a Nobel Prize

In honor of their (apparently) favorite son, Indonesia has unveiled a statue of a youthful Obama in a park in Jakarta. He's wearing shorts, a t-shirt, and... a Nobel Peace Price. Which is fitting, since he had accomplished as much then as today.

I guess butterflies are a fan, too. Also fitting, butterflies are pretty big on Kool-aid.

To Win or Not to Win, The Answer is Obvious

For years, the so-called "nation" of Afghanistan has been called the "Graveyard of Empires." Today, the American military occupies the vast country in response to a terrorist attack on our soil some 8 years ago. We responded, and we responded with force. A heavy blow was dealt and our enemy has yet to respond in kind.

But that does not mean they no longer can, or don't intend to do so again.

After violence escalated in Afghanistan over the past year, Americans began to doubt our ability to succeed. The current President has decided to send 30,000 more troops to the country to fight the same breed of terrorists who killed 2,996 innocent men and women on September 11th. He has also stated that he intends to stop fighting the war in 2011. Therein lies the problem.

America has, beyond a doubt, the greatest military in the history of Earth. Our troops defeated a Japanese Empire that struck in a way similar to 9/11 - with surprise and malice. At that point in history we did not say that we would fight for 2 years and then submit to defeat if we had not succeeded and it is a mistake to do so today. We fought to the finish to defeat the perpetrators of a heinous act.

What America needs to succeed in the War in Afghanistan is not "exit-ramps" or "end games". Our military needs the power to use the resources they need, in the manner they need them to destroy the threat our peaceful nation is facing.

Do not allow the Taliban and Al Qaeda to wait us out, Mr. President. Our security and the fate of the War on terror depends on it.
